SPECIAL ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS:
A special OPENING CEREMONY will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, Oct. 2, with a color guard from the DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS group in Simi Valley placing the colors next to our patriotic opportunity quilt at the entrance to our show.
Displayed with our opportunity quilt will be four 33″ carved wooden military statues, each depicting a branch of our armed forces: Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines. These statues will be auctioned during our mini-quilt auction at 1:00 pm Saturday. All proceeds received for these statues will be donated to the DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS group in Simi Valley.
Tickets will also be available for our patriotic opportunity quilt “America, My Home” (see picture on “2010 Opportunity Quilt”). All proceeds from this drawing will benefit ”FOR THE TROOPS” and “Simi Valley FREE CLINIC”.
The theme of this year’s show is “AMERICA, MY HOME“. We will be honoring those who have served or are currently serving in the military. Stars will be hung in and around our display of quilts. Attendees who may have relatives in the service (now or in the past) are welcome to write their loved ones’s name on a star.
A special exhibit at our show this year, DAUGHTERS AND SONS OF LIBERTY, will feature patriotic theme quilts made by our members. Everything from red, white & blue pieced quilts to quilts honoring our ancestors who served in the Civil War, Revolutionary War, Korean War, or Iraq War and quilts depicting things we think of as totally American.
Another special exhibit will be our “THERE’S NOTHING MORE AMERICAN THAN…….“ challenge which will feature small quilts depicting something we know that originated in our country. Those attending this show can vote for their favorite ‘challenge quilt’ by placing money in the corresponding jar for their selected favorite quilt. At the end of the show the jar with the most money will win the quiltmaker a special prize; and all the money will go to the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.
This year we are pleased to have Diana McClun and Laura Nownes of “QUILTS, QUILTS, QUILTS” fame speaking on Sunday at 1 pm.
Another new venue for us this year will be VENDOR’S DEMOS on Saturday 3-4 pm and Sunday 10-12 noon. They will be promoting a new idea, a new tool, or a quick or new way to do a special technique. Look for special offers from them.
As usual we will have TREASURE HUNTS for kids and adults with prizes for the winners. Our vendor mall has 20 vendors selling our beloved fabric and patterns and tools to make our quilting projects wonderful.
Our guild will again hold a BOUTIQUE selling handmade items made by our members with the proceeds going to the Simi Valley Quilt Guild to fund speakers at our monthly meetings, to support our philanthropy quilting project QUILTS ‘N FORCE, and general operating expenses.
Our local merchants have donated some wonderful door prizes so a Thank You goes to all of them for their generosity.
See you at our show.
